Our mission is to eliminate the academic and attainment gaps in communities within the greater Los Angeles area by providing students, in the 1st through 12th grade, with excellent and high-quality afterschool programs. Bridges strive to create a leveled playing field through its supplemental educational programs with the goal to provide students living in underserved communities with an opportunity to maximize their full academic potential.
Tutoring and homework support are offered in all subject matters for students in grades 1-12. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the widening academic gap among students in underserved communities, in particular among Black students and students of color. As such, we reimagined our program delivery and embraced the virtual environment to meet the needs of students across Los Angeles County with much need tutoring, homework and socio-emotional support as they navigate their K-12 school environment during the pandemic. Currently, our tutoring and homework support are offered in a hybrid format; virtually via Zoom video platform in a one-on-one or small group approach, depending on the students’ academic level and strength. We primarily promote our in-person format that focuses on providing holistic academic support for students in a social-emotionally safe environment.
Bridges Summer STEAM Academy, an extension of our year-round afterschool program, is designed to improve the students' math skills, expose them to STEAM career paths, and promote a college-going culture for rising 5th through 12th grade students. Under this program, we partner with CSU Office of the Chancellor to offer the CSU Summer Algebra Institute for rising 8th through 12th grade students as a subset of our program.
Bridges Academic Center of Excellence offers college preparatory workshops and classes to high school students that include essay writing workshops, SAT practice exams, college application and portfolio assistance.
Our goal is to provide holistic academic and social support for students enabling them to successfully complete each grade level and prepare for college entry or other postsecondary pursuits.
I remember having fun in the classroom, not just learning, but really being excited to understand the concepts that we were going over, understanding algebra and the math behind everything. I remember being excited to understand it. – Past Student
The environment was positively reinforcing…very refreshing for the summer and I could still interact with kids my age and have a place where I could pick up new skills and information. – Past Student
Each student feels special in their own way… The program director knew the names of every single student, which is crazy…, she really made every student feel that she really deeply knew them. She knew their parents, their interests, what they're struggling with, what they're really good with, and things like that. So, she made you feel like you were the only student in the program. – Past Student
